Last Wednesday, the world celebrated, the first day of yet another brand new Year, 2020. As the countdown zeroed to 12 midnight Tuesday, December 31, major capitals of the world and cities witnessed unprecedented fireworks and celebrations to usher in the event.
Over the centuries, New Year Day has come to be regarded as a universal feast observed by virtually every country, race and religion. Although each of the world’s major religions, has its own calendar around which its activities revolve, the entire world has come to regard the Christian (Gregorian) calendar, which runs from January to December, as the acceptable base for counting dates.
One may ask, why so much excitement over New Year celebration? Why greet the first day of the New Year with so much eagerness and expectations? The answers are simple. It’s all about positive wishes and prayers of people of all races and creeds for a better tomorrow. Having presumably taken stock of how they fared in the previous year and after identifying loopholes and shortcomings, everyone prays for a better future. Now that the New Year is here with us, which means a fresh start, is the perfect time to re-assess where we are in life, where we want to go and how we are going to get there. Our feelings about the New Year are simply an embodiment on the hope for better socioeconomic changes and life changing decisions, including the role government’s new policies and programmes will play in achieving individual and group targets. Such positive wishes for one’s self and group, inform the reason for New Year Resolutions. Such resolutions could range from: Starting a meditation practice, learning new skills, eating fewer calories, getting your documents in order, writing business plans to showing more gratitude to people, being kinder to yourself, creating positive attitude and strengthening personal relationships, etc.
As a matter of fact, it is not making resolutions or creating new life goals that matter but learning to change one’s habits. By practicing a few simple positive habits everyday, one is able to tackle the challenges that come, and do so with confidence. The best way to create new opportunities include: Making faster decisions, since most choices can be, reversed if need be and drilling down on your to do list and doing one thing at a time. Those who lack the discipline to do this end up spreading themselves too thin and walk away from opportunities due to fear and suffer from indecision.
What you need are simple things you can introduce into your daily routines that may make your life better, a positive attitude to embrace the New Year including a new sense of optimism. All these stem from a desire to right past wrongs, fix broken pasts, so as to turn a new leaf. So resolve this New Year to stay positive no matter what happens, confront defects, inadequacies, taking God and your spirituality seriously.
By putting all this into practice, one would make the best of year 2020.
